From Jakarta to Langweer
Bartele Gallery was founded in Jakarta in 2009. I started it with my wife Roos, around something we both enjoy: finding beautiful and interesting antique maps and prints, researching their history, and bringing them to collectors around the world.
The gallery began in Jakarta, where it still has a home at the Hotel Indonesia Kempinski. Today the main collection is in the historic village of Langweer in Friesland, the Netherlands. Both galleries are open by appointment. Maps and prints of Indonesia and Southeast Asia have always had a special place in the collection. Over the years it has grown to more than 19,000 pieces: maps and city views, sea charts, natural history and botany, architecture, costume and much more.
It is still a personal business. Every piece is handled, researched and described in-house, and I am always glad to answer questions or help someone looking for something in particular.
Everything in the gallery is a period original, printed in its own day and never a reproduction. A certificate of authenticity is available on request. Bartele Gallery is a member of the NVvA, the Nederlandsche Vereeniging van Antiquaren, and through it of ILAB, and follows their standards for the trade.
Every piece is packed flat between rigid boards or rolled in a strong tube, and shipped insured and tracked anywhere in the world.
